An extruder barrel is a hollow chamber that houses one or more screws in a machine used to create sheets and strips of plastic, rubber, or metal. The barrel's cross-section is cylindrical if it has one screw, or figure eight if it has two.
Extruder barrels are usually made of steel and lined with a wear-resistant alloy. They are often electrically heated and water cooled, and their temperature is monitored by thermocouples during extrusion. The screws are usually machinable steel, but the parts closest to the barrel are treated to prevent wear.
